The Unison Benevolent Fund is a registered Canadian non-profit that provides counselling, emergency relief, and assistance programs for those in the Canadian music community who face personal or professional challenges due to hardship, illness, or economic difficulties.
Unison registration is open to all Canadian music industry professionals.
Unison defines a music industry professional as someone who has earned 55% of their income from music related activity for a minimum of 2 consecutive years.
For those who are retired, or over the age of 65, a music industry professional is defined as someone who earned at least 55% of their income from work as a music industry professional.
Music industry professionals include, but not limited to, the following roles and professions:
musician/artist, booking agent, music association, consultant, distributor, festival, artist management, marketing, publisher, producer, production company, promoter, publication, publicity/PR, radio, recording studio, retailer (instruments and supplies), tour management, road technician, songwriter, talent buyer, tour operator, venue, video, merchandiser.
The Unison Counselling and Health Solutions is a free, confidential counselling service available to all Unison registrants. The service is available by telephone and online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Counselling services are available in English and French and all calls remain strictly confidential.
The counselling and health solutions support line is sponsored by Unison and provided by Morneau Shepell – the largest Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) counselling network in Canada. Counselling is provided by a multi-disciplinary team of accredited professionals who hold master’s degrees or PhDs in the fields of psychology or clinical social work.
Counselling can be provided over the phone or online, and can address a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to: mental health support, managing relationships and family life, finding child and elder care resources, legal advice, financial guidance, workplace challenges, tackling addictions, improving nutrition and focusing on your health. Morneau Shepell's highly qualified, experienced and caring professionals help you select a support option that suits your lifestyle and best addresses the challenges you are facing.
Unison offers five hours of counselling for music industry professionals and their family members. Arrangements can be made for additional help, as it is needed.

Unison provides members of the Canadian Music Community with access to emergency Financial Assistance. This short-term financial assistance is available for a range of financial needs including medical costs, household bills, and general living expenses.
Recipients will be provided with an allocated amount of assistance funds. Assistance funds may be issued all at once or in several instalments. Each case is different and the amount granted is based on a formal application and evaluation process illustrating need.
Any eligible music industry professional (see Who is considered a music industry professional?) can apply for short-term financial assistance by filling out an application. Applicants must provide detailed financial status and history, professional background, and details around the need for financial assistance. Applicants are also asked to provide two references.
Each application is kept confidential and is promptly reviewed by Unison’s Allocations & Services team. Applicants will be provided with application feedback and, if approved, with financial assistance and/or financial, career or personal counselling. Unison’s assistance services are tailored to each applicant’s personal circumstances.
